Plumbers are often asked why an oil boiler should be serviced annually. Here are some just some of the reasons:

1. The filter at the oil tank needs to be cleaned or changed to ensure your boiler receives a good unimpeded flow of clean fuel. Blocked filters result in boiler failure.
2. The nozzle in the burner delivers vaporised fuel. This component wares and should be changed annually to eliminate wasted fuel being pumped into the boiler.
3. Inside the boiler the baffle plates take on carbon deposits. These deposits insulate the plates, making heat transfer to the water jacket less efficient. Therefore more fuel is used to heat your radiators and water in the hot water cylinder.
4. The programmer/controller and valves in the heating system should be checked to ensure they are working correctly.
5. On completion of the service you receive an OFTEC CD11 service form showing the work carried out. This may be required for a HIPS package to prove boiler efficiency. Additionally a flue gas analyser print out is given confirming the boiler’s CO² emissions are correct.

Why is it important to have your Megaflo or similar un-vented hot water cylinder serviced on an annual basis? For efficiency, safety and reliability:

1. Many manufacturers guarantee their cylinders for 25 years. This guarantee may not hold if the cylinder is not serviced by a qualified person.
2. The pressure relief valve and temperature relief valve must be checked.
3. The expansion baffle must be verified on all Megaflo cylinders or on other un-vented hot water cylinders, the expansion vessel checked.
4. There is a strainer in the combination (inlet) valve which needs cleaning to remove particulate thus ensuring a free supply of clean water to the cylinder.
5. The discharge pipe should be checked for blockage.
